1. Vietnam warm
$35–70/day · mid-December to late February · backpackers, food travellers
The strongest stretch of the year almost everywhere in the country. Hanoi is cool and grey — bring a jacket, which surprises people who packed for the tropics. Hoi An and Da Nang land between the rains and the heat.
Hidden cost: almost none. The e-visa is USD 25 for up to 90 days, and 39 nationalities are exempt. Use the official portal only.
2. India warm
$30–80/day · late November to early March · any budget, any trip type
Peak season for good reason: Rajasthan is finally comfortable, Kerala's backwaters are at their best, and Ranthambore's dry season makes tiger sightings realistic.
Hidden cost: the fog window. 10 December to 10 February is a formally designated fog period — Delhi cancelled 66 flights on 2 January 2026 and 148 on 31 December 2025. Fly midday, not at dawn, and leave a buffer day before any international departure.
3. Morocco warm
$50–90/day · December to February · culture, souks, desert
Marrakech and Fes in December are the temperature you wished they were in July. The desert drops hard after dark, and Chefchaouen is colder than its photographs suggest.
Hidden cost: a private 4x4 desert tour instead of a shared one can double a two-day cost. Riads are often unheated — ask before booking.

Japan, Portugal and Turkey sit in the $80–220 band. Japan offers the most distinct winter — powder snow and onsen — but added several taxes in 2026. Portugal is Western Europe's cheapest winter city break. Turkey delivers the widest variety per dollar.

Two trips in one country: Niseko and Hakuba for some of the most reliable powder on earth, or Tokyo and Kyoto for illuminations and an outdoor onsen in falling snow.
Hidden cost: Kyoto's raised accommodation tax (from 1 March 2026, ¥200 to ¥10,000 a night), Hokkaido's new lodging tax (1 April), and the 7-day JR Pass rising to ¥53,000 on 1 October. Price your route before buying the pass.
5. Portugal cold

Lisbon is mild, often sunny and dramatically emptier — the trams that are unbearable in August are usable. The Algarve becomes a walking coastline.
Hidden cost: border time. The EU's biometric Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Allow extra time at passport control, especially on first enrolment.
6. Turkey cold

The Hagia Sophia without a cruise-ship queue is a different experience. Cappadocia gets light snow that turns the valleys surreal, and Pamukkale's terraces are warm whatever the air is doing.
Hidden cost: cancelled balloons. Winter cancellation rates are far higher than summer, so book your first morning and hold two spare — operators rebook rather than refund.
Is a luxury winter trip worth it at $220 a day and up?
Here's where the gap between the number you budget and the number you pay gets wide enough to ruin a trip's last day. Three of these four are worth the money if you go in with the right expectations. One of them is priced in a way that deserves to be spelled out before you book.
7. Finland cold
$220–450/day · late September to early April · aurora, families, Arctic firsts
The most complete Arctic package: glass igloos, huskies, reindeer, aurora. Solar maximum passed in October 2024, but 2026–27 is still a strong window.
Hidden cost: trip length. Two nights is two rolls of the dice; five turns the aurora from a gamble into a probability. Budget the nights, not just the rate.
8. Maldives warm
$300–800+/day before taxes · dry season, November to April · honeymoons, diving
Hidden cost — the big one: 17% tourism GST plus a 10% service charge is roughly 27% on top of every listed rate, and a flat green tax of $12 per person per night sits above that. A $300 room for two is about $405 all-in; across a week the green tax alone is $168. Departure tax runs $40 to $960 by cabin class. Budget from the invoice, not the listing.
9. Switzerland cold
$250–500+/day · mid-December for markets, January–February for snow · skiing, scenic rail
Zermatt and St. Moritz need no argument. The Glacier Express across the Oberalp Pass in snow justifies its own ticket price.
Hidden cost: lift passes and equipment, which sit outside almost every daily-budget figure you'll read.
10. New Zealand warm
$180–350/day · December to February, their summer · road trips, hiking
While the north is at its darkest, New Zealand is in high summer — daylight past nine, Great Walks in season.
Hidden cost: this is their peak season, so you're paying local high-season rates. Add the NZ$100 International Visitor Levy, collected with your NZeTA and non-refundable even if declined.
Four things to check
Two things changed in 2026 that affect half this list, and one thing that hasn't changed is being widely misreported.
- ETIAS is not live. The 2026 target was dropped in July 2026; 2027 is now realistic. No portal exists, so any site taking ETIAS payments today is fraudulent.
- EES is live. Fingerprints and a facial image at every external EU border since 10 April 2026. Affects Portugal, Switzerland and Finland here.
- Book 20 December to 3 January months ahead. Lapland igloos and New Zealand campervans sell out rather than just getting pricey.
- Check ski insurance. Standard policies often exclude off-piste, and Alpine evacuation is expensive.
