ETIAS Delayed Again: What It Means for Your Trip
ETIAS is Europe's planned online travel permit, the EU's version of America's ESTA. It is not live. There is no launch date. Nothing can be applied for, and any website taking your money for one today is a scam. That is the whole answer, and it is not what most of the internet will tell you.
The full name is the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is a pre-screening step, not a visa: eligible travellers will fill in an online form, pay €20, and get an approval linked to their passport before they fly. Whether it applies to you depends entirely on which passport you hold, and for a large share of the world it never will.

In mid-July 2026 the European Union quietly deleted the words "last quarter of 2026" from the official ETIAS page. No announcement, no press release, no replacement date. The page now says only that the system is currently not in operation and no applications are being collected.
That followed Financial Times reporting that eu-LISA, the agency building the system, had internally concluded a 2026 launch was no longer achievable. Home Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner reportedly acknowledged it in a letter to aviation executives, citing insufficient national infrastructure and staffing.

No. The official portal states that ETIAS is currently not in operation and that no applications for travel authorisations are collected at this point. The European Union says it will announce a specific start date several months before launch.
If you are travelling to Europe this week, this month or this winter, there is nothing for you to do about ETIAS.
The official ETIAS portal currently lists no confirmed launch date. An older European External Action Service page still refers to a Q4 2026 launch and a €7 application fee.
Both have changed. The Q4 2026 target was withdrawn in July 2026, and the fee set in legislation is €20, confirmed by eu-LISA. Official pages across different EU bodies update at different speeds, so check the ETIAS portal itself for the current fee and timeline rather than a summary of it.

The repeated blocker was the same each time. ETIAS legally and technically requires the Entry/Exit System to exist first, and EES kept slipping. That excuse is now gone, because EES went fully operational on 10 April 2026. The integration work since has thrown up new problems instead.
eu-LISA's management board met on 17 June 2026 and produced no replacement date. It instead tasked the agency with preparing a revised implementation plan for its September meeting.
Section 03EES is the system already running
This is the part most coverage buries, and it is the only part that affects you right now.
The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at every Schengen external border since 10 April 2026, after a progressive rollout that began on 12 October 2025. It replaces passport stamping with a digital record. On your first entry it registers your fingerprints and a facial image, along with your travel document data and your entry and exit records.
It is also why European airports had multi-hour queues through summer 2026.
EES collects biometrics. ETIAS will not. The EU states explicitly that biometric data is not collected with ETIAS.
EES happens at the border. ETIAS happens before you travel. One is a registration you cannot avoid on arrival. The other will be an online authorisation you obtain in advance.
There is an optional Travel to Europe mobile app that lets non-EU nationals pre-register passport data and a facial image within 72 hours of reaching an EES crossing point. Availability varies by country and it is not compulsory.

ETIAS is only for visa-exempt nationals, covering 59 countries and territories entering 30 European countries. If your passport already requires a Schengen visa, ETIAS will never apply to you, whatever a travel site has told you to prepare for.
EES is the opposite. It applies to every third-country national crossing a Schengen external border for a short stay, including people who hold a visa. Enforcement will be phased rather than immediate. A transitional period of at least six months follows launch, during which travellers should apply but will not be refused entry solely for lacking an authorisation, provided they meet all other conditions. A further grace period follows that. Full enforcement is unlikely before roughly a year after launch.
ETIAS does not change how long you can stay. The 90 days in any 180 rule is unaffected.
Section 06The scam problem
The application portal is not open. Frontex, the EU border agency, has identified more than 100 unofficial websites claiming to process ETIAS applications, charging inflated fees of €50 to €100 and above.
They cannot issue anything, because the system does not exist yet. There is no fast-track, no premium processing and no authorised third-party service. The only official portal is on the europa.eu domain.
This matters more than the launch date. People are paying money today for a document that cannot be issued, and handing passport and card details to sites that look official because they use the EU logo.
Section 07What to watch next
The next milestone is not a launch. It is a meeting.
eu-LISA's management board is due to consider a revised implementation timeline in September 2026. That plan goes to the European Commission, which then formally sets a date and gives the travel industry and travellers several months of notice before the portal opens.
So the sequence is: board agrees a plan, Commission announces a date, several months pass, applications open, six-month transitional period, then a grace period, then enforcement. Even an announcement tomorrow would not affect a trip booked for this winter.
